Bella Coola to Williams Lake

British Columbia > Canada > America
December 13, 2010 - 3 star route rating Motorcycle Road3.5

This is really a mixed bag, but all of it great in one way or another. Landed in Bella Coola by taking the ferry from Port Hardy on northern Vancouver Island (about $250 for an overnight 20 hour trip). Bella Coola is a tidy First Nations town. Nice pavement up to The Hill. This switchback gravel road is quite an easy climb, not nearly as hairy as I had been lead to believe. Easy on a bike but wouldn want to try it in an SUV towing a trailer! Some spots down to one for trucks coming down the hill...they don /can stop. Once up the hill it is still dirt road but in such good shape that it may as well be paved, but it was dry while I was there. Could be slippery when wet! about 40K of dirt and then the rest was paved with good surface. Mostly wide open cruising, sweeping corners, no traffic (and few gas stations). Watch for wildlife (bears, deer, moose) on roads. Great distance ride. Incredible scenery. Wide open high plains country. Great campsites and home cooking stops at the main spots. Geat ride!

Lake Cowichan to Duncan

A nice country road and a good alternative to the highway nearby which is straight and as boring as it gets. The old road parallels the river and has some nice picnic parks along the way. Watch for blind driveway entrances to the road and many deer on the roadsides.

Renfrew to Cowichan

British Columbia > Canada > America
December 13, 2010 - 3 star route rating Motorcycle Road3.5

This was a logging road only a year ago that been upgraded with paving recently. There were still a few miles of dirt (good condition) but lots of twistees. Stop at the big tree rest stop to see a collosal tree! Road occasionally narrows to a lane and a half. Watch for occasional logging trucks in these sections as there will not be much room left. Starts cold on the coast and warms up quickly as you get closer to Cowichan. No fuel along the way (no nothing along the way actually) but fuel, pubs and restaurants in Lake Cowichan. Make a great loop ride from Victoria to Sooke to Renfrew to Lake Cowichan to Duncan and back to Victoria.

Sooke to Port Renfrew

This is a great ride along the coast and through the forest. Road surface varies but generally okay. Watch for wildlife, deer, bear etc. Can be cold with ocean breeze. Some nice rivers to stop at and relax with a sandwich. Pub and a couple of restaurnats in Port Renfrew. NO GAS along route. If you are stuck you can get some gas at the marina in Renfrew but it is off the beaten track.

Duffy Lake Road : Whistler - Lillooet

Just a great ride! Lots of corners and just enough straights to get by slow traffic if you e on the throttle hard. Wildlife warning, this is remote country. Great new pavement on the Whistler half of the road but old nasty pavement complete with frost heaves on the interior half of the route. Lots of great picnic spots along the way next to lakes and rivers. Corners can be tight so you have to stay alert. Can be dicey in heavy rain or early/late season with slippery sections in the shade.
A great ride though. Good pubs/restaurants at each end to warm up in. Gas at each end but nothing along the way.
