Quite pleasant route for both riding and sight seeing up to and around Crater Lake NP. Check the weather, it can be cold/foggy/raining/snowing at Crater while sunny just a few miles away. Little traffic early or late in the season, can be crowded during holidays or when school is out. The road around Crater Lake is breathtaking from the western entrance, but gets the road surface gets progressively worse as you ride clockwise around the lake as part of the rim road is closed during the winter months and therefore ends up with more weather damage to the surface. Be sure to take the road to the Pinnacles which has to be seen to be believed!
A wonderful selection of great corners over this, undoubtedly one of the best roads in this area. The turns just keep on coming and the scenary is great mostly. Great for practicing your skills.
Awesome ride from either end. Road transitions from river level on the Columbia River to over 2500 feet high through desert plains with sections of scenic canyons and running streams tossed in for good measure. Not much fuel out here, plan to fill up in Lyle or in Goldendale. There is no gas at the Roosevelt end of the ride. Roads recently repaved and are well marked with little loose gravel to worry about (Oct 2012).
